What is the issue concerning polygamy?

There are at least 30,000 people who are involved in Mormon fundamentalist sects that practice polygamy, or plural marriage.

Some of these groups often strive to put on a positive image for the public, presenting themselves as a happy group of people who freely and faithfully live out their religious beliefs. And no doubt, there are those who live the polygamy lifestyle for whom this is a reality.

However, for many of them--particularly the women and children, but also many of the men--it is a life of spiritual bondage, fear, abuse, exploitation, and a deprivation of basic freedoms and human rights. Their leaders are often abusive, requiring unquestioning obedience to their authority.

Nearly all polygamists believe that the only means of salvation is through the doctrine and practice of plural marriage.

A Shield & Refuge Ministries exists to bring a message of biblical hope to those caught in Mormon fundamentalist movements. The message we proclaim is:

1. God dearly loves people trapped in fundamentalism, but fundamentalism and plural marriage are NOT His will or purpose for anyone.
   
   
2. Salvation is freely available to all...but through Jesus Christ alone, not through plural marriage.
   
   
3. There IS a way out of plural marriage and fundamentalism.
